For a fresh graduate to be competitive, the major and degree surely are the key standard for us making evaluation, yet meanwhile, other qualifications, including learning capability, the willing for learn, communication skill and logical thinking, spoken English are also very important.

So if you really would like to get a role of Equipment Engineer, fist of all, admit that your major is actually not the right match, this is a sign that you may lack of equipment related knowledge. You could start with listing out all you Equipment related knowledge, and prepare as soon as possible by adding your knowledge in this area. Meanwhile, sharpen other skills that mentioned above.

A brief JD of Equipment Engineer for your reference.
BTW, Benjamin, in many cases, 曲线救国 could be a more rational choice, by this I'm not saying we should abandon our dreams, but realize it through other ways.

Not this kind of question for a fresh graduate, but more of related knowledge and methodology. For example, if your major is biochemical, maybe the better choice would be starting with jobs like material or process or planning engineer, but in a semiconductor company. Then in the company, you could get access to learning more equipment related skills. Then you could make internal transfer or find related jobs in other companies you like.

Also, your willing may change in the process, and you may find out your true “love” instead of being stuck by a certain one
