Having some experience does give you some edge in certain aspects of work. However, the willingness to learn and being teachable is more valuable. Before being hired I had six years in college specialized in semi-conductor. But what has helped me along is the hunger to learn. Because the systems in industry are advance and geared to profit as opposed to research which may be more towards academic progress. I do think that anyone hiring will be looking for that.
